FAQ

What food is included and does it cater for all diets?

Evening meals and breakfasts will be provided via the hotels, apart from the evening of Day One, as specified in the itinerary above. Lunches are a generous buffet-style with plenty of essential energy food to keep you going! In addition, we will provide refreshments at each cycle checkpoint of which there will be 2 each day, consisting of water, juices and high-energy snacks. The crew and our partners can cater for all special dietary requirements provided you let us know well in advance of the trip. However, if you have unique dietary requirements its is advised that you bring some of your favourite snacks with you for riding, as choice can be limited across European countries.

What’s unique about Adventure Challenges? Why should I choose you?

How fit do I need to be?

Adventure Challenges attract people of all levels of experience and fitness, all ages and backgrounds. We expect all participants to train hard in advance to achieve this challenge, but we respect everyone’s limits. We have graded this ride a difficulty level 2/8. For further information regarding how we rate our challenges click here. You will be in the saddle for upward of 60 miles a day for 4 consecutive days, so you should ensure, as a minimum, that you are comfortable riding upwards of 50 miles in a day and have achieved this regularly before you leave for the trip. The profile is relatively flat but will have some parts that are undulating, especially if you choose to taken on our optional climbs, so you should include some hilly rides in your training to get the most enjoyment. We design our challenges so that everyone can go at their own pace; this is not a race.

Who will be there to support me during the event?

Experienced Adventure Challenges Crew leads your trip. Crew members are selected for their experience in cycling events around the world, their friendliness and approachability, sense of humour, and ability to safely and effectively deal with any situation that arises. Our crew leaders are also trained in outdoor First Aid. You are in very safe hands with the Adventure Challenges Crew.
The number of crew and support vehicles looking after you will depend on the final size of your group, but the team will be looking after every aspect of your trip, whether that’s transporting your luggage, sorting out any mechanical problems or giving you a lift in our back-up vehicle – our “Love bus.” At Adventure Challenges, we pride ourselves on our high crew to cyclist ratio and believe it leads to greater trip enjoyment and excellent trip safety.

Will I be safe?

Your safety, and that of the rest of the group, is our highest priority. Our trips are designed and planned with safety in mind. Your crew will be equipped with emergency mobile phones, First Aid kits and other safety apparatus wherever necessary. They always have access to our 24-hour emergency back-up in the UK. Our leaders are responsible for safety on the trip and will make any changes to the itinerary they deem necessary should local conditions dictate.

Pre-trip administration – such as compulsory medical questionnaires and travel insurance – is all done with your safety in mind.

What happens to my luggage each day?

Our support vehicles are with the group all of the time. All luggage and spares are carried in vehicles as we travel to each destination. Each day, when you arrive at our hotels, you will hand over your bike for safe overnight keeping and collect your luggage. Each morning, you will hand over your luggage and collect your bike. Space is limited and hard- sided luggage is not suitable, so it is essential that your kit is packed in a soft sailing bag, rucksack or expedition kit-bag, preferably weighing no more than 15kg.

What insurance will I require?

It is a requirement of entry that you have adequate travel insurance to cover you in this event. Please ensure your policy lists cycling as an activity covered and covers you for medical, cancelation and theft, and any other incidentals you require. We will require a copy of valid insurance before travel.

Are flights and transfers to and from destination included?

No, we do not arrange any flights for this challenge, enabling you to take advantage of the many competitive fares between Austria, Hungary and different UK cities. We will, however, ensure that your bike is safely transported to and from the event if required, allowing you the freedom to enjoy your free time in Budapest.

Adventure Challenges will provide advice on best travel options and further accommodation requirements should you require.

Will I receive further information?

Yes, a full detailed information pack is issued following registration and before you set off for your event. In addition, pre-event support is always available; email us at info@adventurechallenges.co.uk with your questions.

Itinerary

Day One – Arrive in Salzburg
On arrival in Salzburg, you can check into the hotel from 3 pm and spend your free time (flight-times/travel options dependent) exploring the city. You will meet the crew at registration and receive details of the first day of cycling. Your bikes will have arrived safely in advance and will be ready and waiting for you to start your challenge. As participants arrive throughout the day and evening, tonight’s evening meal is not included, and you are free to explore.

Day Two – Salzburg to Passau
Our exciting event begins after breakfast as we head north, leaving the hustle and bustle of Salzburg behind and cycling our way along the undulating countryside and stunning views of Austria. Pedaling our way through many typical Austrian towns, we head towards Seeham and the Obertrumer See, a bathing lake with excellent water quality. Journey through the stunning, undulating terrain, and we continue north before crossing the border into Germany. Changing our direction slightly, we head northeast and hug the River Inn for a short spell to Obernberg and then finally cycle back inland to reach Passau, the city of three rivers, and our stop for the evening.
Distance: 72 miles (115 km)

Day Three – Passau to Linz
After a good night’s rest and breakfast, we set off, leaving Passau behind as we cycle our way to join the Danube River for the first time. Following this beautiful river’s gentle undulating cycle paths, it is easy to see why this well-cycled route is popular with locals and tourists of all ages! Heading southeast, continuing along the famous Danube, the longest river in Europe, it is not long before we return to the border and back into Austria. We remain in the vicinity of the river all the way, passing the quirky towns of Kastern and Schlogen. Around this point, you will have an option to continue along the river or take on some gentle to moderate climbing (max Category 3) before both route options reach our stop for the night at the provincial capital of Linz, with its charming historical centre of Renaissance houses. This city has a lot to see, from Baroque buildings to the ancient town square.
Distance: 64 miles (103 km)

Day Four – Linz to Emmersdorf
We set off after a good rest from Linz, continuing on relatively flat terrain along the north side of the river. We then cycle east crossing the river to the south side, heading through the country’s largest wine- producing province in lower Austria. Spoilt by the romantic mountainous scenery, we savour all those sublime views and memories which seem to just keep getting better! Taking in the distant sights of many amazing architectural buildings, monasteries and castles, we continue along the cycle paths. Once again, you can choose to take a hillier option, just off the river and experience one or two hills (Category 2 to 5). We rejoin the river and head for a well-earned rest in the delightful small town of Emmersdorf, situated very close to the river banks in the district of Melk.
Distance: 63 miles (101 km)

Day Five – Emmersdorf to Vienna
After breakfast, we embark onto the final leg of this outstanding adventure. Continuing our journey along the north side of the Danube, we encounter the first of many pretty sunflowers and abundant wheat fields as we cross to the south side, enjoying this delightful countryside towards Tulln. Continuing through the beautiful terrain, the excitement begins to build as we cycle to Austria’s capital, and our event finish in Vienna’s artistic and cultural city. Savour the final miles of this incredible journey, through the city streets and onto our finish, at Hofburg Palace; where we will celebrate your remarkable achievement and toast to a successful Chapeau ride!
Distance: 75 miles (120 km)
